My Grandmother, Margaret Pennington., gifted a painting titled Salthouse Dock to the Walker Art Gallery many years ago. On the back it stated ' Exhibited at the Royal Academy' . We have the paperwork confirming this and that we could view the painting at any time.As it was gifted we understand we have no legal right to the painting but several years ago we asked to view it only to be told it was no longer at the gallery and a Mr Parrot, helpful as he was, could not explain where it was. You can understand our disappointment but I have since found out through your website that the painting is in private ownership. The painting was gifted for the people of Liverpool and not an individual.Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

I just read in the Daily Mail (online) that this painting 'Salthouse Dock' has ben sold for a large sum of money.
Quote from Mail:'pensioner couple who bought a Victorian oil painting for less than £100 were said to be 'amazed and delighted' today when it sold at auction for £185,000.
The bustling landscape of Salthouse Dock, Liverpool, by John Atkinson Grimshaw has been owned by a Northumberland couple for 50 years since they bought it from a dealer in London's Burlington Arcade.
